What Is Bone Morphogenic Protein?
Thanks to modern medicine, there are several innovative treatments that are available today to help restore bone loss such as bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) therapy. At Oral Surgery Specialists of Pueblo, our skilled surgeons use BMP during bone grafting and jaw surgery to stimulate the body's natural regenerative process. The use of BMP helps with bone tissue growth and is a naturally occurring protein in the body that triggers the function of bone-building cells called osteoblasts.
When there is insufficient bone mass in the jaw, this can deteriorate one's overall oral health and prevent the ability to receive dental implants. For this reason, our oral and maxillofacial specialists like to incorporate BMP therapy to help restore normal bone tissue levels for dental restorations. BMP is often included in conjunction with ridge preservation, sinus lifts, and tooth extractions. Our practice in Pueblo, CO is dedicated to helping you achieve the smile and oral health you desire so you can feel confident. Call our office today to learn more about BMP therapy.

"Thank you for making my visit positive! I'm such a baby when it comes to dentistry but you all have made it much easier for me to tackle that fear! Such a positive experience! Thank you!!"- M.S. / Google / Jan 01, 2022
"Everybody was Genuinely kind Hearted. It was a pleasant Atmosphere."- P.S. / Google / Jan 01, 2022
"I highly recommend this office. The girls up front were super nice from the moment I walked in. The staff was great as well. Cassie and Dr Bailey explained everything thoroughly before the procedure, and turned a scary thing into a walk in the park. If I ever need more work this is definitely the place to go."- J.M. / Google / Dec 31, 2021
"Receptionists were nice, office seemed clean. The surgeon I had was top notch! He explained everything to me thoroughly and professionally. Answered my questions patiently and as far as I can tell did a swell job. He had *excellent* bedside manner and i cannot stress how important I find that. The gal (not sure of her name or title) who got me hooked up to the machines was nice and when we got to the medical side extremely professional. Only complaint is the masking, I get it I guess (though they dig around in your unconscious, unmasked mouth), but I still hate not seeing people's faces. I would 100% recommend them to anyone needing wisdom tooth extraction and I imagine they are just as great with their other services."- J.A. / Google / Dec 30, 2021
Who Is a Candidate for Bone Morphogenic Protein?
Patients who are in need of a tooth extraction or dental implants for restoration should consider the use of BMP especially if there isn't enough bone tissue to support future implants. The use of BMP helps generate your body's natural production of bone tissue for optimal structure and function. This innovative procedure may also help prevent the need for a bone graft, which sometimes involves the use of artificial bones. In addition, it has been reported to aid in and speed up recovery time. BMP may not be recommended if you have certain medical conditions, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
What Is the BMP Treatment PRocess?
BMP is typically extracted from your own bone or it can be sourced from a certified bone bank. During your consultation and initial exam, our oral surgeons will determine which is the best source for your specific condition. Our practice we also utilize iCAT™ Cone Beam imaging technology to better understand your needs and develop the treatment approach that is ideal for you. These diagnostic tests also help us determine where to place BMP to enhance bone regeneration for dental implants.
Once your custom treatment plan is created, we will schedule your oral procedure. On the day of surgery, the target area will be numbed and sedation dentistry will be used if desired to help make your treatment as comfortable as possible. The BMP solution will then be administered via a specialized sponge and mesh material will be placed to protect the area. We will then suture the gums to enable optimal healing and fusion to create a strong foundation for future restorations.
BMP Treatment Aftercare and REcovery
BMP is usually incorporated with bone grafting surgery or another oral surgery that requires sufficient bone mass for positive long-term oral health. After any surgery, swelling and discomfort is normal but will these symptoms should decrease as your body heals. Our office will also provide you with at-home care instructions to follow to assist in your recovery process. Over-the-counter medication and cold compresses may also help reduce mild discomfort. On average, it takes about six months for the bone graft site to heal but we will schedule follow-up appointments to closely monitor your progress to determine when it is best to schedule implant surgery.
Is Bone Morphogenic Protein Covered by Insurance?
Depending on your insurance plan, BMP may or may not be covered but our practice will get in touch with your provider to verify your specific coverage. From there, we will estimate your out-of-pocket costs and review all of your options. We do all we can to help make oral care affordable and convenient for all of our patients by providing flexible payment plans and accepting third-party financing through CareCredit®.
